The police officer who killed Nahel in Nanterre on June 27, 2023 respected the instructions governing the use of his weapon, said his lawyer Me Laurent-Franck Liénard on Monday on BFMTV, which could allow him to obtain, according to him, a non- place.
“We can move towards the dismissal of the case, all the conditions are met,” assured the lawyer the day after a large-scale reconstruction organized in Nanterre on Sunday.
The death of the 17-year-old teenager after a chase had become a symbol of police violence and had triggered nights of riots of rare intensity across France.
In a video relayed on social networks, two police officers are visible on the side of the vehicle and point their weapons at the driver. One of them, brigadier Florian M., shoots him as the vehicle starts again.
The yellow Mercedes crashes a few dozen meters further into a concrete block.
This publication contradicted the first police version, which said that the young man had rushed into a biker.
According to Me Liénard, this first version did not come from his client but from the police services.
For him, the reconstruction was important because on the video, “we can’t see that (my client) is stuck on a sidewalk, that right behind him, there is a wall”.
“Objectively, he was not crushed, but he could have felt that he could have been,” he noted.
Furthermore, “the other occupants of the public space will be in danger” if the police then let Nahel leave, who, at 17, did not have a license, added the lawyer.
The counsel of Nahel’s mother, Me Nabil Boudi, had on the contrary assured earlier in the day that the reconstruction established that the police officer “was not in danger”.
