It is a photo of Jack Garofalo, great photographer of Match, which was chosen as the poster for the 76th Film Festival. An honor.

The unveiling of the Cannes Film Festival poster is always a moment awaited by moviegoers and collectors. We remember that in 2022, on the occasion of its 75th edition, a poster was offered to each accredited journalist, to mark the history of the Festival and of course that of cinema.

It was taken in June 1968 by Jack Garofalo during the filming of the film “La Chamade” by Alain Cavalier, on a pontoon on the beach of Pampelonne in Saint-Tropez, not far from the Croisette. In this film adapted from an eponymous novel by Françoise Sagan, Catherine Deneuve gave the reply to the late Michel Piccoli.

An emblematic character of Paris Match from the 50s to the 80s, Jack Garofalo nicknamed “Garo” was a charmer. Funny, mischievous, the stars who posed in front of his lens became his friends, like Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot and of course Catherine Deneuve. An intimacy with the artists which allowed him to obtain rare moments of freedom which he knew how to immortalize with talent. He pretended that he knew nothing about the technique of photography, that it bored him, but he had a genius for light…

For the Cannes Film Festival, “there is a certain magic that Catherine Deneuve embodies, pure, incandescent and sometimes transgressive. It is this unspeakable magic that the 76th International Film Festival resonates with this timeless poster. »
