On January 9, 2025, Chinese authorities identified the clade Ib variant of the mpox virus, with an initial outbreak linked to a traveler coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Four other cases were detected among his close contacts, presenting mild symptoms (rash and blisters).

In response, China is strengthening border controls, particularly for goods and travelers coming from risk areas. Health declarations and testing will be applied to symptomatic or exposed individuals.

Classified as a Category B infectious disease, mpox can lead to emergency measures such as restricting gatherings, closing schools and sealing off affected areas.

Mpox, or monkeypox, is spread by close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. Although benign in the majority of cases, it can sometimes be fatal.
