Facing a massive influx of patients, the Neuchâtel hospital network is overwhelmed. Local authorities therefore invite people suffering from non-vital pathologies to find other solutions.

The Neuchâtel Hospital Network (RHNe) is facing an exceptional overload of its bed system due in particular to the flu. The authorities invite people suffering from non-vital pathologies to opt for other solutions in the canton.

The invitation aims to limit waiting times at the emergency services at the La Chaux-de-Fonds and Neuchâtel sites, RHNe said on Wednesday. The latter are overloaded, particularly due to the flu epidemicthe spread of respiratory viruses and an increase in trauma cases.

Mask required

The massive influx of people requiring hospitalization leads to saturation of the system with bedswith more than 430 patients hospitalized on the various sites of the institution, compared to 340 to 360 in a normal situation. In this context, the RHNe emergency department gives priority to receiving serious cases.

Accordingly, patients suffering from benign pathologies must wait longer before being treatedspecifies the press release. Faced with the current situation, the cantonal health authorities are asking the population to turn to other solutions in the event of non-vital situations.

Moreover, the RHNe makes it compulsory, with effect from this Wednesday, to wear a mask in care areas, specifies the hospital institution. The idea here is to not make the situation even worse, as much as possible. (ats)
