(Ecofin Agency) – In Africa, the demand for qualified professionals in the media field is on the rise. In order to respond to this demand, a joint initiative by CAF and Canal Plus intends to raise awareness and train young people for sports journalism professions.

The Confederation of African (CAF) and the Canal Plus International media group signed, on Monday January 6, a three-year partnership agreement aimed at developing a training offer in sports journalism intended for young Africans.

This agreement is presented as a technical, non-financial partnership. It encourages the media to host workshops for young reporters and to make available the content of its Canal Plus University training platform, offering subjects on the use of new technologies in reporting, the coverage of sporting events, art of journalistic storytelling and immersion in television and digital journalism. The media outlet will also conduct hands-on training for a reduced number of learners.

These activities will be offered as part of the African school football championship, a continental tournament that CAF has organized each year since 2023. This championship, which targets categories under 15, takes place in three phases: the domestic phase, the regional phase and the final tournament. During these phases, the training program will try to offer an alternative to young people who are passionate about football, but who do not have the necessary talent to become professional footballers.

“CAF signs this agreement to lay the foundations of an awareness program for sports and audiovisual journalism”noted Véron Mosengo-Omba, secretary general of CAF and also signatory of the convention alongside Jacques Dupuy, president of Canal Plus International. For the latter, the ambition of his media through this training program is to respond to the growing demand for qualified professionals in the African media landscape.

Sports journalism training is in addition to other training programs initiated as part of this school competition. This concerns in particular the training of young first aiders and referees.
