Sugary drinks are responsible for one in ten cases of diabetes worldwide. In addition, one in thirty cardiovascular diseases is directly linked to the consumption of sugary drinks, according to a study published this Monday, January 6 in the journal Nature Medicine.
In Switzerland, scientists attributed 10.5% of cases of type 2 diabetes diagnosed in 2020 to the consumption of sugary drinks, Laura Lara-Castor of Tufts University in Boston (United States) told Keystone-ATS. , lead author of the study. When it comes to cardiovascular disease, sugary drinks were responsible for 3.1% of all new cases.
The sugary drinks category includes sodas, but also fruit juices, energy drinks and lemonade.
More than two million cases worldwide
The authors used data on 184 countries from the Global Dietary Database, a collaborative compilation of food and nutrient consumption levels in countries around the world.
In all, more than two million cases of type 2 diabetes, and more than a million cases of cardiovascular disease, are attributable to sodas. Latin America and the Caribbean are particularly affected: almost a quarter of type 2 diabetes cases in this region are due to sugary drinks. Sub-Saharan Africa experienced the greatest increase in this type of diabetes between 1990 and 2020, with 8.8%. Political measures are therefore urgent, underlines the research team.
