Tuberculosis: Management by public health workers of cases and their contacts in the community

This document focuses on pulmonary tuberculosis, which constitutes the main threat to public health. The main recommendations also apply to other forms of contagious tuberculosis. The working group focused on the Quebec specificities surrounding the management of tuberculosis cases and contacts and the resulting recommendations. He therefore hopes that this professional practice guide will serve as a reference tool for any public health intervention following the declaration of a case of active tuberculosis.

The task force’s mandate did not include updating screening recommendations outside of the context of exposure to a case of tuberculosis. This document is not a clinical management guide. Only items regarding diagnosis and treatment essential to public health intervention were included. For information of a more clinical or complex nature such as the diagnosis and treatment of extrapulmonary or pediatric forms, the reader is invited to refer to the chapters of the Canadian Standards for Tuberculosis Control for more information.

This professional practice guide covers the management of tuberculosis cases and their contacts in the community. It was developed from the previous version (v.2017) of the document published by the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) and initially called Intervention Guide: Tuberculosis (©Gouvernement du Québec, 2017), and incorporates the main changes made in 8e edition of the Canadian Standards for Tuberculosis Control (1–17) while emphasizing the particularities related to the context of public health practice in Quebec. It is not a clinical management guide.

This guide was produced with funding from the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services. It is aimed at public health professionals in order to support the intervention.
