The magazine 60 Million consumers recently conducted a survey that could well shake up the eating habits of pastries fans. Their study looked at industrial croissants found in bakeries, revealing the worrying presence of toxic pesticides in these products. This discovery puts a spotlight on the quality and food safety of these sweets adored by the French.
Why so much love for the croissant for breakfast?
Croissants are a bit of a symbol of French breakfast. In 2021not less than 1.8 billion croissants have been sold in various stores across France, proof that their popularity is not waning. One study even shows that 75% of French people regularly fall for these little flaky wonders.
But be careful, when it comes to nutrition, it’s not all rosy. With their high fat content, they are not recommended for those watching their blood pressure. They are also high in calories and low in fiber, which can quickly raise blood sugar levels and promote extra pounds when abused.
What does the 60 Million study really tell us?
The team of 60 Million consumers sifted 13 varieties croissants, including 12 with butterpurchased in different cooking chains and terminals around Nantes. The idea was to evaluate the quality of the croissants found on the market.
The results? Not always reassuring… Three types stand out as being particularly bad for health: butter croissant at Marie Blachère and that of Casino (in a box of 4) obtained a mediocre rating of 9,5/20while the Banette butter croissant pick up a sad one 9/20. These products contain significant residues of toxic pesticides.
Unwanted chemicals
The analysis highlighted substances of concern such as piperonyl butoxide (a synergizer used in pesticides) as well as various insecticides such as pyrimiphos-methyl, cypermethrin and spinosad. These compounds pose risks not only to our health but also to certain animals and insects.
Fortunately, the study also found some safer options for discerning enthusiasts. THE pure butter croissant sold by Monoprix obtains an honorable rating of 13/20thanks to its less fatty, less sweet composition and without chemical pollutants. Just behind come La Brioche Dorée and La Mie Câline with each a respectable 12/20.
How to enjoy without worry?
With these worrying revelations before our eyes, it is better to go easy on the industrial croissants. Consumers are advised to eat it in moderation to avoid excessive accumulation of the harmful substances discovered.
For those who want to enjoy their croissants without compromising on quality, why not start making them at home? It’s a nice alternative to escape the chemical pollutants present in certain industrial varieties.
