In fact, this analysis was based on 80 different studies, bringing together nearly 25 million patients under the age of 50 suffering from colorectal cancer. We see that in half of the cases, the first symptom of the disease is manifested by blood in the stools. This is followed by abdominal cramps and disruption of transit. “The time from presentation of the sign or symptom to diagnosis of early colorectal cancer was often between 4 and 6 months”, explains the researcher.

But don’t panic just yet: having blood in your stool doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer. Other explanations may be hidden behind this phenomenon, such as the presence of hemorrhoids. Despite everything, the authors of this new American study found that people under the age of 50 presenting this symptom had five times the risk of developing cancer compared to others.

Alzheimer’s: this symptom that would allow the disease to be diagnosed early

Joshua Demb explains that too often young people are not worried about the presence of blood in their stools and do not seek medical help right away. However, remember that the earlier a cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chances of complete remission. The study’s experts therefore advise extra caution. Remember that in Belgium, screening for colon cancer is strongly recommended from the age of 50. If detected in time, this cancer is curable in 9 out of 10 cases.

Also be sure to watch your diet, as certain foods can promote the development of colon and intestinal cancer.
