The case of contamination dates back to the end of September. An information meeting will be organized next week at the Quai Édouard Branly high school, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, where a student contracted tuberculosis, according to information from the Progress confirmed at Figaro. Parents of students were informed on Tuesday by email of the implementation of a precautionary protocol, the terms of which will be specified.
The rectorate ensures that “the situation is under control” and judges the risk of contamination to other students to be low. He justifies the delay in information sent to parents by the long incubation period of tuberculosis, from one to three months. After this period, tests can now be carried out on certain students. The sick high school student was able to be treated. He even started classes again.
A few hundred cases per year in the region
“The treatment of tuberculosis combines several antibiotics over an extended period, usually 6 months”indicates the ARS Auvergne Rhône-Alpes website. About 10% of people infected with tuberculosis develop the disease. The infection is not contagious, only the disease is. It is characterized by a persistent cough, prolonged fever, night sweats, blood in the sputum and weight loss.
A disease requiring notification due to its high contagiousness, tuberculosis can take serious forms in immunocompromised children. The BCG vaccine helps protect against these serious forms, but vaccination coverage has declined since 2007, when it was no longer compulsory. This disease remains rare, with 4,217 cases reported in France, including 463 in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
