October 29 is World Stroke Day. What is at stake in this prevention campaign, carried out with the AVC24 association, for the Périgueux hospital center?
It is a common pathology, unfortunately. In 2023, there were 480 stroke alerts in Dordogne. This year, we are already at the same figure and there are two months left. We are gaining in treatment efficiency every year but the number of cases continues to increase. It is therefore important to raise awareness on the subject and help identify the signs of a stroke: mobility difficulties in one half of the body, speech problems, vision problems, etc. Recognizing the main ones can save lives. If you witness a stroke, you must immediately call 15. Speed is the key. During the accident, every minute, approximately two million neurons die. The quicker we intervene, the higher, or even total, the recovery rate. Conversely, delay is synonymous with permanent losses. You must not waste time and go to the emergency room as quickly as possible.
Is it possible to limit the risk of stroke?
There are two categories of factors that promote stroke: those that can be controlled and those that are out of control. The first concern lifestyle. High blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes are the main risk situations. Consumption of tobacco, alcohol or drugs is harmful. Factors beyond your control include genetics. If our family has cases of stroke, we are not necessarily going to have one but there are greater risks. Men are more affected than women. The risk of accident increases with age, that’s life, we can’t fight it. In all cases, we can – and must – limit the risks. Practicing physical activity, eating healthily… No need to be an athlete, walking 30 minutes a day is already very good. Prevention also means carrying out regular checks, particularly of blood pressure and blood sugar, with your doctor. And if medical treatment is indicated, you must endeavor to respect it.
