Haut-Katanga: at least 3,000 cases of cholera recorded in several health zones

Since the start of the year, more than three thousand cases have been recorded with more than one hundred and sixty deaths in several health zones of Haut-Katanga. However, in the Lukafu health zone where this epidemic is occurring, some people indicate that this health zone does not benefit from the support of the Government in the fight against this disease which has already caused several deaths.

These allegations are rejected by the Minister of Health of Haut-Katanga, Joseph Sambi Bulanda.

“Cholera is rampant in an endemo-epidemic manner in our province. And the province always responds promptly and equitably in all health zones. There is a strategy of pre-positioning inputs at the central offices to intervene as soon as a simple case is announced and these same inputs are pre-positioned in the most remote areas”explained Joseph Sambi Bulanda.

For the case of Lukafu, he notes that 68 cases have been reported since the first week with six deaths.

“The inputs were delivered well. And since the start of the year, the province has seen a cumulative number of 3,075 cases with 168 deaths. People who declared that they did not receive support from the province only need to provide reasons for their declaration. We are doing our part as a government and the provincial team always intervenes to help the health zones in an equitable manner,” he added.
