During an interview with L’Equipe, Richard Gasquet (38) announced that he would end his career after participating one last time at Roland-Garros in 2025.

A new page in the history of French tennis will soon turn. Indeed, after notably Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon in recent years, another big name in French tennis of the 21st century will soon say stop. During an interview with L’Equipe, Richard Gasquet made the news official and declared that he wanted to end his long career (22 seasons among the pros) with a last Roland-Garros in 2025. At 38, the man who is currently 133rd in the world has so far won 16 titles, as well as the Davis Cup with the Blues in 2017. “I think it’s the best time for me to do it. This is the best tournament to do it. It’s magnificent, we’re lucky being French to be able to stop in these kinds of incredible places », explained in particular the elegant right-hander, whose one-handed backhand has made many fans of the little yellow ball dream.

Gasquet: “I can’t go any further”

“An end is always complicated, all the former great players have often told me, it’s not easy to announce it. You never know when, how, where… There, in any case, it’s obvious. (…) It’s not heartbreaking because I gave it my all. I played so much, so many matches… I started tennis at 3 years old, that will be 36 years of training, every day! I started with the pros in 2002, and I will be here twenty-three years later… Twenty-three years on the circuit! I can’t give more, quite simply, I can’t go any further, Gasquet, who played in three Grand Slam semi-finals, subsequently admitted to the French sports daily. (….) But I am very calm about the idea of stopping. I can’t have any regrets about my career. I’m lucky enough to be able to choose when I say stop, without depending on an injury. It’s fabulous. » There is no doubt that “Richie” should receive a very nice tribute in a few months at Porte d’Auteuil.
