After a period of tension linked to the withdrawal of Indian troops from the archipelago, the President of the Maldives began his first state visit to New Delhi on Monday. Several financial aid packages have already been announced.

The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, began his first state visit to India on Monday, October 7, with a meeting with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. His country will notably provide aid of 33 million euros to the Maldives and a loan of more than 360 million euros. A way to help the country repay its debts, held mainly by China, as the archipelago approaches default.

A new sign of appeasement between India and the Maldives. After his election a year ago, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu obtained the withdrawal of Indian troops from the archipelago. Relations then became strained for several months, with India fearing to see this new pro-Chinese president move closer to Beijing. Good news for Indian companies. This Monday, UPI, the Indian mobile payment service announced its launch in the Maldives. The Indian National Bank also formalized the 700 housing units built on the island of Hulhumale thanks to its loans. More than 3,000 homes must still be built by next year for a cost of more than 200 million euros.
