Sunderland took advantage of defeats for West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn to climb to the top of the Championship after a 2-0 win over Derby.

Goals either side of half-time from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor made it four home wins from four matches for Régis Le Bris’s side.

West Brom, who began the evening at the summit, went down 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough thanks to Hayden Hackney’s 73rd-minute strike. Blackburn’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by a 3-0 defeat at Coventry. Jake Bidwell and Haji Wright put Coventry in control and Brandon Thomas-Asante secured the three points when fired home from the edge of the area with six minutes left.

Scott Parker got the better of former England teammate Wayne Rooney as his Burnley side beat Plymouth 1-0 to climb to second, courtesy of Josh Brownhill’s first-half penalty.

Largie Ramazani’s equaliser on the hour earned Daniel Farke’s Leeds a point from their trip to his old club Norwich. Josh Sargent put the hosts’ ahead with a 13th-minute penalty after he was brought down by Joe Rodon.

At the bottom, Cardiff finally broke their win duck by beating Millwall 1-0. Perry Ng scored only their third goal of the season with near-post header from a corner after 39 minutes.

Oxford came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at Luton. Jordan Clark and Tom Krauss put the Hatters 2-0 up before Tyler Goodrham pulled one back with a fine first-time curler just before the break. Ruben Rodrigues hauled the visitors level and Luton finished the game with 10 players after Liam Walsh, moments after coming on as a substitute, was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Siriki Dembele.

Goals from Cody Drameh, Christian Bile Bedia and Liam Millar gave Hull a 3-1 win at Queens Park Rangersfor whom Nicolas Madsen scored with a penalty.
