Michel Barnier will propose “the social partners to think about reasonable accommodations”

Towards adjustments to the controversial pension reform, adopted by 49.3 last year? Michel Barnier opened the door this Tuesday, during his general policy speech to the National Assembly. The Prime Minister indicated that he would propose “the social partners to think about reasonable and fair adjustments” of the reform, affirming that it “we will have to resume the dialogue” after the reform caused a massive social movement in early 2023.

“Certain limits of the law passed on April 15, 2023 can be corrected”he said, quoting “the questions of progressive retirement, professional attrition, equality between women and men in retirement”, which “deserve better than dismissals”. However, “it is imperative to preserve the sustainable balance of our distribution system”indicated Michel Barnier, who did not mention a possible return on the gradual postponement of the legal age of departure to 64 years.

Not enough – undoubtedly – to satisfy the unions, who are purely and simply demanding the repeal of the pension reform adopted by the government of Élisabeth Borne in the spring of 2023. This repeal was one of the key demands of the demonstrations organized on Tuesday in across the territory by the CGT, FSU and Solidaires. It is also demanded by the National Rally (RN) and the left. The party of Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen will thus use its parliamentary niche on October 31 to include this measure on the Assembly’s agenda. The left is divided on the strategy to adopt.
