South Africa wants to take steps to successfully organize a Grand Prix in Kyalami. It was one of its political leaders who confirmed this, after the country had already tried to obtain a place on the calendar recently.
“We have hosted the World Cup, South Africa is ready and we will host the best race in Formula 1” South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie told SportsBoom.
“South Africa is the best country in the world. We want Rwanda to get Formula 1, we want South Africa to get Formula 1, why when it comes to Africa it has to be is there one? The time of Rwanda has arrived, the time of South Africa has arrived.”
“It's not a zero-sum game, it doesn't have to be South Africa. It doesn't have to be South Africa or Rwanda. Just look at the F1 to know that it is one of the two. We wish Rwanda good luck!”
McKenzie then addressed Lewis Hamilton, after the Briton's glowing remarks about the idea of racing at Kyalami and on the African continent: “Lewis Hamilton, you said you dreamed of racing in South Africa. I'm here to tell you that we won't rest until your dream comes true and you race in South Africa.”
Toby Venter, CEO of the Kyalami circuit, confirmed that the circuit's objective was to achieve FIA Grade 1 before the end of next year: “We have reached 90% of our goal, but the remaining 10% will be achieved next year. What has already been done is a detailed plan of what we need to do and how we need to do it.”
“Kyalami, as you all know, is a viable business entity in its own right without Formula 1, and it is very busy, so our job is to integrate construction without disrupting our business operations. Rest assured that by the end of Next year Kyalami will be F1 certified.”
