Formula 1 | Williams : Albon retires, Colapinto thanks the team

Franco Colapinto was the only Williams driver at the finish in Las Vegas, away from the points.

But he at least brought his FW46 back in one piece, which was important after the alert given by James Vowles before the start (read here). A big accident on top of that and there was the risk of ending the season with just one car!

“It was a difficult weekend. Qualifying yesterday went very well and I felt more and more comfortable, but I started the lap too close to Gasly, I had a very complicated last corner and unfortunately I finished with a lot of damage.”

“From our starting point in the pit lane today we were able to make progress and overall we did a good job. It was difficult to manage the tires because we had a lot of graining.”

“I have to say a big thank you to the garage team, who have been the heroes of the last two races. They had to rebuild an entire car yesterday so I could race today and it's amazing how good they are They are the best and I am very grateful to them. We know that other opportunities will present themselves next week in Qatar and we will bounce back.

Alex Albon had to retire due to a Mercedes engine problem. He was playing in the top 10, which caused great frustration.

“We had a good car today and could have scored some good points, so it's frustrating to retire with an engine problem. We need to understand if it's a similar problem to Libre 2 or the same problem we had in Singapore, but we will try to get to the bottom of it.”

“We've had some tough times this year, so we have to stay strong. From my side, I understand that these things happen, but I wanted a good result for the team to reward everyone for the hard work they provided during these really difficult times. It wasn't meant to be, so we'll try to focus on the last two races of the season and hopefully we can turn things around.”
