Liam Lawson receives 60 place penalty for his return to F1

Liam Lawson will start from the back of the grid this Sunday in Austin for his return to after using an all-new power unit.

The New Zealander, returning to F1 to replace Daniel Ricciardo, will not start from the best possible position this Sunday, far from it.

Recovering the engine components from Daniel Ricciardo, Liam Lawson is therefore forced to suffer a penalty this weekend. The entire power unit has been changed, resulting in a crazy 60 penalty places on the grid.

Rest assured, Lawson will not leave from the last corner of the circuit. In this case, the rule states “that a driver who has received more than 15 cumulative penalty places on the grid must start behind any other classified driver”.

Liam Lawson should therefore start last on the starting grid this Sunday, and will therefore have to make a big comeback if he wants to enter the points zone.

However, he will have the opportunity to shine in the Sprint race this Saturday, and even this Friday in Sprint Qualifying. Lawson also had a good comeback with a solid 13th place in EL1, finishing just 130 thousandths behind his teammate Tsunoda, 10th. Also note that he finished ahead of a certain Sergio Pérez, only 16th at the wheel of his Red Bull.
