Liam Lawson is preparing for his return to Formula 1, replacing Daniel Ricciardo after replacing him mid-season. The 22-year-old New Zealander, who has impressed in his five debut races in 2023, is eager to take on the challenges of the remaining 2024 season and prove he deserves a permanent seat in 2025.
After being given the opportunity to return to the pinnacle of motorsport, Lawson expressed his gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his journey. He reflected on the immense dedication it took to reach this point, noting that racing in Formula 1 had been his dream since childhood.
“To everyone who stuck with me through all the years leading up to this, thank you,” Lawson said. “Obviously it’s a huge journey and, for me, it’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid.”
Lawson is aware that simply securing the seat is only the beginning, and the real challenge lies in performing at the highest level. He is determined to make the most of this opportunity and hopes his performance in the next six races will earn him a full-time position with Red Bull Racing for the 2025 season.
“Obviously now we have another mountain to climb going into the season and hopefully driving next year as well,” Lawson added. “I hope this is the start of F1 for me, but I just want to say thank you to everyone, because I really appreciate it.”
Lawson joined the Formula 1 grid in 2023, taking the place of the reviled Ricciardo, and quickly showed his potential. He enters the 2024 season with confidence, particularly as he prepares for the United States Grand Prix in Austin, despite the added challenge of competing on a new track.
“It’s going to be difficult to take over. Austin, I haven’t done it either, so even though I’ve done a lot of simulation work, it’s going to be a big challenge. I would say I’m more prepared, definitely more prepared this year than I was last year,” Lawson said.
Red Bull’s performance throughout the 2024 season has been inconsistent, making the final races crucial. Lawson will need the full support of the team to excel and help push Haas back for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship, with just three points separating the two teams.
As Lawson prepares for the next stage of his Formula 1 journey, his focus remains on finishing the season strong and securing a long-term future in the sport.
