To reduce the number of accidents involving cyclists, the highway code has just been amended. This concerns the rules of light signaling for cyclists and in particular lighting.
The main development concerns the total ban on flashing lights, including at the rear of the bicycle. Previously, only the front lighting had to be steady, while the rear light could flash.
Decree No. 2024-1074 of November 27, 2024 corrected the Highway Code: “At night, or during the day when visibility is insufficient, any motorized personal transport vehicle or cycle must be equipped with a rear position light. This light must not be flashing and must be clearly visible from the rear when the vehicle is mounted. Any motorized personal transport vehicle or cycle may be fitted with an additional rear position light meeting the same characteristics. The driver may carry such a light with him.”
End of flashing red light
The decree of November 24 authorizes the installation of a brake light at the rear and flashing lights to indicate a change of direction. The indicators to signal a change of direction cannot complement a system already installed on the bicycle.
If you want to carry this additional lighting with you, that is now also possible: helmets, or vests, equipped with LEDs are now allowed!
Reflectors are also mandatory on the pedals, at the front and rear of the bicycle. On the spokes of the wheels too, unless the tires already have retroreflective strips. As for the fluorescent vest, it is obligatory at night outside urban areas.
