Frédéric Théobald, president of the Regional Cycling Committee of the Islands of Guadeloupe was elected to the National Federal Cycling Council last weekend.
Guest of the Caribbean 1 p.m. of RCI this Thursday, December 26, he notably mentioned the new rules put in place to avoid disputes caused in recent years by the participation of riders accumulating licenses in foreign and Guadeloupean clubs.
Thus, a procedure was put in place to avoid the new “imbroglio” between the committee and Boris Carrière’s CCD team during the last International cycling tour of Guadeloupe.
I had a big problem with foreign runners. We have changed the rules which will be applicable from January 1, 2025 concerning certificates of membership because that too will be a hindrance. We had runners who came in tourist conditions, who were put at the expense of the princess by local leaders. And it was not fair to our young people who were at school, on internship. Now that we have put the brakes on so that it can be within standards, we can no longer hide behind that.
Allow young people to hatch
For him, this clarification of the rules should make it easier for young Guadeloupean runners to flourish.
Now they can practice their sport with complete peace of mind. and also increase their level and for 3-4 years with the Tour of Guadeloupe which has taken on a truly international dimension in terms of routes, in terms of topography, the riders have more confidence that now it is necessary to train and the technical supervisors also are formed, have made their update. And we still have cycling that has really increased. We cannot say the opposite. We have a lot of young people emerging.
Beyond the Urcels, we have young people who are 19 years old, 20 years old, who are starting to knock on the door and who, within 2-3 years, will be the spearheads of our cycling.
