“I like to surprise myself and my audience”: at the dawn of his 60th birthday, Bollywood star Aamir Khan refuses retirement

In deep reflection during the pandemic, Aamir Khan, emblematic figure of Bollywood, had considered ending his career. As he approaches his 60th birthday, the actor and producer confirms that he wants to continue to surprise and encourage new talents.

As he approaches his 60th birthday in March, Aamir Khan looks back on a pivotal moment in his life. Draped in a shawl, neat mustache, he confides in the doubts that crossed his mind during the Covid-19 pandemic. “It was in the middle of the Covid crisis, I was thinking about a whole bunch of things and I realized that I had spent my entire adult life in this magical world of cinema”he remembers from London.

This iconic actor, known for successes like 3 Idiots, Dangal and Lagaan, had considered turning the page. “I had a hard time overcoming this feeling of having wasted a lot of time, I felt a lot of guilt… My first instinct was to say that I had had enough of cinema”he confides. This introspection had pushed him to want to leave the cinema. But encouraged by those close to him, especially his children, he finally changed his mind: “In my head, I said to myself, I’ll stop. And then I didn’t”.

A platform for new talents

Always in search of new horizons, Aamir Khan now wishes to use his production house, Aamir Khan Productions, to support emerging creators who share his sensibilities. Now, as he approaches his 60th birthday in March, he wants to “continue playing and producing for some time to come.”

It is in this spirit that he co-produced Lost Ladies, a comedy tackling the status of women and marriages in rural India. This project, produced in collaboration with his ex-wife Kiran Rao, illustrates the actor’s commitment to social themes, often at the heart of his filmography.

“Surprise the audience”

Refusing to confine himself to one genre, Aamir Khan asserts his desire for diversity. “I like to vary genres and touch on different kinds of stories. I like to surprise myself and my audience”he says. However, he does not hesitate to be critical of himself, notably evoking his disappointment with his performance in Laal Singh Chaddha, an Indian adaptation of Forrest Gump released in 2022.

His next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, according to him, promises to live up to expectations. But for Aamir Khan, every project remains a challenge. “Making a film is very difficult”he emphasizes. “When I look at the film we made, and then the screenplay we wrote, I wonder if the film achieved the goals we set for ourselves.”
