A 53-year-old GP in Sunderland, UK, tried to poison his mother’s partner to get his inheritance.

A perilous plot. This Monday, Thomas Kwan, a 53-year-old British doctor, pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Newcastle court in the north of England. He was on trial for having poisoned his mother’s companion by posing as a nurse and administering a fake Covid-19 vaccine, reports the press agency Reuters.

The prosecution described this case as “one of the most elaborate criminal plots in recent years”. According to prosecutor Peter Makepeace, the doctor had set up a scheme to get rid of his mother’s elderly boyfriend and inherit her mother’s property. The victim survived despite suffering from necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially fatal flesh-eating bacterial infection.

A sordid ploy

Thomas Kwan “used his encyclopedic knowledge and research into poisons to carry out his plan”said the prosecutor. In November 2023, the respondent wrote to his father-in-law, aged 72, to inform him that he was a priority, due to his age, for a Covid 19 vaccine booster, indicates West .

On January 22, 2024, the doctor went to the home of his mother and her partner to carry out his plan. To do this, Thomas Kwan checked into a hotel under a false name, used a fake license plate, and disguised himself with a wig, surgical gloves, and a pair of glasses indicating the Guardian.

A video surveillance system made it possible to trace the journey of Thomas Kwan, reports the Guardian. At his home, many chemicals like arsenic and liquid mercury were found. The trial verdict will be known on October 17.
