Iwrote about oppressed peoples, victims of war and forced into exile in his many works. The novelist Elias Khoury died in Beirut, this Sunday, September 15, 2024, after having shown his support for these peoples in all his works. Undoubtedly one of the greatest Lebanese novelists of his generation, the man of letters died at the age of 76, according to sources close to his family relayed by AFP.

Elias Khoury died after a long illness in Beirut, where he had been hospitalized for many months. His work, which addresses the themes of memory, war and exile, has been translated into many languages, including French, English, German, Hebrew and Spanish.

One of his best-known novels, The Sun Gatepublished by Actes Sud in 2002, is an epic that recounts the tragedy of the Nakba, the forced departure of Palestinians from their lands during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, and was adapted for the cinema in 2004 by Egyptian director Yousri Nasrallah.

In addition to the Palestinian question, which he addresses in many other novels, including the trilogy Children of the Ghetto (Actes Sud), which is one of his latest works, he also recounted the Lebanese civil war in several of his works, such as in The Little Mountain (1977) or Its (Actes Sud, 2004).
