HAS Like New Caledonia, the situation in Martinique is becoming tense. As reported The Parisianviolence broke out on the night of Friday 13 to Saturday 14 September 2024. This second night of unrest comes on the sidelines of the demonstrations against the high cost of living.

Since mid-week, tempers have been flaring. While the people of Martinique are demanding lower consumer prices, some are resorting to downgrading them. The Fort-de-France police station was targeted on the night of Friday to Saturday. The prefecture stated in a press release that “the Fort-de-France police station was the target of two shots with live ammunition committed by two hooded individuals on a motorbike.”

Foodstuffs 40% more expensive than in mainland France

Since the beginning of September, the population has been mobilized to express its discontent with the excessively high prices of everyday consumer products. The Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources (RPPRAC) had asked large retailers to align prices with those in mainland France, as foodstuffs are 40% more expensive in Martinique.
