According to information published in the Variety last month, the music of Dune: part two, composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer, is not eligible for the Oscars this year because it repeats too many themes already heard in the first film of the saga – which also won the Oscar for best original score there. three years ago.
According to the Academy’s criteria, the music for a film sequel must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes or music borrowed from other soundtracks of the franchise, specified the Variety.

Visiting New York last week for a screening of Dune: part two, Denis Villeneuve was questioned on the subject. And he strongly contested the disqualification of Hans Zimmer’s music: “I am absolutely against the Academy’s decision [des Oscars] to exclude Hans [Zimmer]frankly, because I have the impression that his music is one of the best of the year,” underlined the Quebec filmmaker, in comments reported by the site SlashFilm.
“I don’t use the word ‘genius’ very often, but Hans is one,” he added.
According to Villeneuve, the soundtrack of Dune: Part Two is “a continuation” of that of the first part, to the extent that the two chapters were conceived as “a large film cut in two”.
“But I’m not here to complain,” he concluded jokingly.
