The Rage Against The Machine guitarist celebrates his childhood bandmate and Tool guitarist Adam Jones in a tribute filled with memories and admiration.

Shared beginnings in The Electric Sheep

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello posted an emotional message on Instagram to salute his longtime friend Tool guitarist Adam Jones. The two musicians met at Libertyville High School in Illinois, where they played together in a band called The Electric Sheep.

“Adam was the bassist and only real talented musician in our high school band, The Electric Sheep,” writes Morello. “He taught me chords, pinch harmonics, and took us to Judas Priest in his pickup to inspire us. He encouraged me tirelessly when I was starting out on guitar.”

Adam Jones: more than a musician

Before becoming one of the most influential guitarists in Tool, Jones had an impressive career in special effects, working for Stan Winston Studios on iconic films like Jurassic Park et Nightmare On Elm Street.

Morello also remembers Adam’s impact on his own career: “He dragged me out of bed one weeknight to go see a band called Lock Up at Al’s Bar. I then joined this group and got a contract.”

The first time Tom saw Tool live

Morello also recounts his first Tool concert: “I saw them at their very first show, and I was amazed. They were already amazing and fully formed. They were also kind enough to invite Rage Against The Machine to open for clubs in Hollywood, which helped us immensely in building our audience.”

A tribute full of friendship and respect

Morello concludes his tribute by expressing his pride in his friend’s career: “I’m proud that after all these years, he and his band continue to thrive and rock stages around the world. Cheers, buddy!”

Jones responded by sharing Morello’s post on his social media, adding a happy holiday message on behalf of The Electric Sheep.
