Frédéric Lopez has never hidden it: his private life has not been a long, quiet river. The host did not have an easy childhood, but he fought not to repeat the same mistakes as his father with his son Victor, now 27 years old.
Frédéric Lopez often manages to loosen the tongues of celebrities in his show A Sunday in the countryside. His empathy helps his guests to confide in sometimes delicate subjects such as bereavement, breakups or depression. It must be said that the journalist and producer has also experienced painful episodes which allow him to show empathy…
Frédéric Lopez and his complicated relationship with his father: “I was afraid of him”
Interviewed by our colleagues from TV Magazine not long ago, the creator of Meet in unknown land – of which an episode presented exceptionally by Frédéric Lopez for the 20th anniversary of the show should be broadcast in January 2025 -, also looked back on his childhood, which was chaotic to say the least. And on his relationship with his father.
Because if today he says he is at peace in his relationship with his father, understanding him and forgiving him for his absence when he was a child was not easy, even with the help of therapy. “I was afraid of my father, he was a severe, mysterious person, who didn’t talk about his emotions and didn’t give compliments”he first confided. And to specify, without dwelling on the subject: “I have a lot of affection for my father because I know he went through the worst”.
Frédéric Lopez was not a “perfect” father: what relationship does he have with his son Victor?
Frédéric Lopez's childhood was complicated to say the least. “I was not a wanted child. My mother gave birth to me at 16 years old in the greatest secrecy. My father left for Morocco before returning when I was two years old, to fulfill his duty. J 'had the face of constraint'he explained in the columns of The two of us in 2016.
Having become a father in his turn at the age of 30, Frédéric Lopez has not yet fulfilled all the boxes he had promised to tick. “I thought I would be a better father. Obviously it wasn't perfect”conceded Victor's father, now 27 years old. “Everyone adapts with their own baggage and neuroses. But I have a bond with my son that I didn’t have with my father at the same age”he added, however, not a little proud of his good understanding with his son.
