The 73-year-old daughter of Elizabeth II has been discharged from Southmead Hospital in Bristol, south-west England, where she had been receiving treatment since Sunday evening for concussion and “minor injuries”. She returned to her country residence in Gatcombe Park, west London, in the morning.

In a statement, her husband Tim Laurence conveyed “his warmest thanks to the team at Southmead Hospital for their care, expertise and kindness during the short stay” of his wife, who is very popular in England.

On Wednesday, he said the princess was “slowly” recovering from the accident. She is expected to remain at her Gatcombe Park estate while she recovers and will only resume public activities with the all-clear from her doctors.

According to British media, the shock caused memory problems and the princess does not remember precisely what happened.

Anne is a high-level rider and even represented her country at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976.

Anne, who is styled Princess Royal, is the busiest member of the royal family, with hundreds of engagements a year. She undertook more than King Charles last year, and the sovereign’s cancer, like that of Princess Kate, has increased her workload further this year.

Valued for her sense of duty and outspokenness, the late queen’s only daughter is more popular than her brother Charles III, according to a recent YouGov poll.
