Sean Penn and Robin Wright separated in 2010 after 14 years of marriage and nearly 20 years together. The actor told the New York Times that it was more difficult to form friendships after a separation when children were involved.
Sean Penn has admitted it took “a while” for he and Robin Wright to become friends after their split.
The former celebrity couple ended their 14-year marriage in 2010. They had been dating since 1989. The two actors have two children, Dylan, 33, and Hopper, 30.

“It turns out it’s a lot quicker to reestablish a friendship after a divorce if there are no children involved,” the 63-year-old actor recently told the New York Times. “Robin and I took a while to reconcile. There was a lot of drama.”
He added: “It’s much more important to repair a friendship if there are children, but it’s not easy, is it?”
“Being friends with the father of your children… it’s a gift”
Last year, they were spotted together on several occasions. “Being friends with the father of your children…I mean, it’s a gift, because we know that divorce with children is one of the hardest things in life,” said the 58-year-old actress at E! News last year.
Sean Penn has been married three times. He first married Madonna from 1985 to 1989, a second time with Robin Wright and a third time with actress Leila George in 2020. The couple divorced in 2022.
The actor said he is “excited every day” to be single. “I am simply free,” he said. “If I have to be in a relationship, I will always be free, or I will not be in this relationship, and I will not suffer. I don’t feel like my heart will ever be broken over a love story again.”
