the essential
The Serventi gallery honors Toulouse painters from the last century whose notoriety has gone far beyond the borders of the Pink City. On display until December 15.
Discreetly nestled in a corner of rue d’Astorg, in Toulouse, a little away from the hustle and bustle of the city and yet a stone’s throw from Place Saint-Georges, the Serventi gallery is opening this week a new exhibition which pays tribute to painters from the Toulouse school.
“We have brought together around fifty paintings by artists who marked the history of Toulouse in the last century, to which we have added some more recent works. This exhibition does not claim to represent the entire Toulouse school, of course, but you will recognize well-known signatures such as those of André Marfaing, Raymond Espinasse, Renée Aspe, among others, explains Alix Serventi. Some of these works were bought by my father or entrusted to us by collectors. start around 1000 euros”…
On the eve of the opening, which takes place this Friday, the young woman was sorting out the final details in this gallery created around ten years ago by her father, André Serventi. This renowned art dealer from Grenade-sur-Garonne today works in Toulouse with his wife Catherine and his two daughters, Léa and Alix.
For all tastes
The Serventi family had the idea of bringing together works by artists who were born in the region or lived there. Example with the famous Catalan painter and sculptor Joan Jordà (1929-2020), a child of exile who arrived in Toulouse in 1945. All his sensitivity is felt in this “Woman with swinging arms”, painted with broad strokes in tones of gray. Eras and styles intersect and confront each other like so many collector’s favorites.
There is something for everyone. You can spend a good time looking at the multitude of characters and details of the nativity painted by Mady de la Giraudière (1922-2019), a Toulouse artist who brought naive art into the big leagues. Daydream in front of this sublime timeless view of “Toulouse under the snow”, captured by Jean Hugon. Or even smile in front of “Watch over the other”, an urban painting by Jazzu, 41, a rising star bathed in street art today very fashionable in Toulouse. From Rechou (1856-1944) to the exuberant Did Dontzoff (born in 1956), there is a world but what we love about this exhibition is its diversity, with a common denominator, Toulouse.
