Why is Robert Downey Jr.'s (Iron Man) fight against AI a symbol in Hollywood?

Why is Robert Downey Jr.'s (Iron Man) fight against AI a symbol in Hollywood?
Why is Robert Downey Jr.'s (Iron Man) fight against AI a symbol in Hollywood?

His position has clearly not gone unnoticed. Robert Downey Jr., best known for his role as Iron Man at Marvel, has issued a stern warning to anyone who would like to create an AI replica or a deepfake of him in a film.

The actor, who participated in the podcast “On With Kara Swisher”, warned: “I intend to sue all future leaders”who would make this type of decision.

The star also clarified that he did not imagine that it would come from Marvel and its executives whom he knows well. The host then pointed out to him that this could happen after his death with new decision-makers. He then responded with this warning intended for the decision-makers of the future.

Note that Robert Downey Jr. is currently starring in the play McNeal on Broadway and that the latter is very critical of the big names in artificial intelligence, such as Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.

Hollywood has mobilized to regulate AI

This very clear rejection of AI is anything but an isolated case in Hollywood. Wired reminds us that screenwriters who are members of the Writers Guild of America, or WGA, launched a 148-day strike last year to obtain guarantees regarding the use of this type of technology.

They were then joined by other actors' unions, notably the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA, themselves eager to obtain protections.

If all is not yet won, their fight has been victorious. Thus, each actor receives a salary equivalent to the amount he would have received if his digital replica was used.

Likewise, and as reported The Point in 2023, “no digital replica can be used to evade the participation and payment of a second-rate actor”a measure which secures the extras.

Finally, studios are required to obtain the consent of an actor or his beneficiaries when a digital replica is used, while the contract will stipulate the manner in which the latter will be used. Guarantees which are enough to reassure Robert Downey Jr., even if, as we have seen, the latter remains on his guard. The conventions are also re-discussed regularly and nothing is set in stone.
