With 314 chalets, spread over around ten sites in the island ellipse, the 2024 edition of the Strasbourg Christmas market renews the system which welcomed 3.3 million visitors last year. A record that the City is not chasing, aware that the event is on the edge in terms of attendance. To smooth it out as best as possible, Strasbourg Capital of Christmas will begin, for the first time, during the week. Launch on Wednesday, November 27 with a day dedicated to families and children, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Advent Village, square Louise-Weiss in Petite-France. Children are invited to decorate the Village trees with musical, tasty and festive activities.
To stick to the theme of this edition – Books – the Advent Village also offers a whole program of shows and stories. A reading corner is set up to discover Christmas books, legends and winter tales in trilingual – French, English and German. Outside, a book shed invites you to read.
Standing in the heart of Place Kléber, an essential symbol of Strasbourg, the Christmas capital, scrutinized each year with a plumb line to see if it is leaning, the big tree is getting up to date. From a giant book opened and placed at his foot, “words fly away, releasing magic alongside white paper flowers, symbols of the fertility of the spirit and the richness of stories”.
Five tales and legends
Other books refer to the art of origami and canivet, bringing a touch of modernity thanks to the whiteness of the paper and the cutting of shapes, the City further specifies. These books refer to five popular tales and legends: Hans Trapp et le Christkindel , Saint Nicholas and the Three Little Children , The Nutcracker and the Mouse King Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, The Night Before Christmas de Clement Clarke Moore, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
From November 27, meet every hour from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a luminous and musical awakening of the big tree, Place Kléber. Note, at 10 p.m., 11 p.m. and midnight, the big tree wakes up but without music. Then place in a sleep mode: switching off until 4 p.m. the next day. At the foot of the green giant, like every year, the associations grouped together within the Village du Partage. There are nearly 90 of them, spread across 14 chalets (read elsewhere).
A publishers' chalet will be set up at Place Saint-Thomas and local publishers will offer entertainment every day. Decoration workshops and night walks with a photographer will be offered by the 5e Location, Place du Château.
