The extraordinary destiny of Joséphine Baker is back on display. While almost 50 years ago, in April 1975, Joséphine Baker took the stage at Bobino for the last time, “Joséphine Baker, the musical” returns to rue de la Gaîté for a series of sixteen performances.

From October 16 and until the end of January, the emblematic hall once again hosts the musical dedicated to the incredible story of this inspiring artist, born in 1906 in the United States, married at 13, who became a music star -hall, but also a spy for the resistance and died on April 12, 1975, in , just a few days after having made her big return on stage in Bobino, after having experienced ruin. To mark the 50th anniversary of his disappearance, the show created in June 2022 has a new opening, expands its cast and plans several surprises.

A fascinating woman

On stage, the show imagined by librettist and composer Jean-Pierre Hadida and performed by actress Nevedya in the role of Joséphine Baker, retraces her life worthy of “a novel” in around fifteen scenes. The opportunity to (re)discover this free and courageous woman, but also to learn more about the star who entered the pantheon in November 2021. “Everyone knows the singer, the banana belt, “I have two loves” , but not everyone knows her past as a resistance fighter, as a spy,” explains Jean-Pierre Hadida to CNEWS.

Designed in collaboration with his son Brian Bouillon Baker, one of the twelve children that Joséphine Baker adopted to found her rainbow family as she nicknamed it, this musical biopic summons on stage everyone she met from the 1920s to the 1970s. Among them : Martin Luther King, whose fight against racism she shared and whom she joined in 1963, during his famous “I have a dream” speech. She was, that day, the only woman to take the podium.

The result is, in music, the portrait of an exemplary woman in more than one way, having lived through an entire era defending her convictions, until her death at the age of 68.
