Luxembourg is desperately looking for IT specialists | The Borderers

There is a shortage of IT specialists in Luxembourg. So that the population (whether resident or cross-border) can train in this area, there is the Digital Learning Hub.

15 years ago, some politicians were still wondering about the impact of the Internet. Today it is clear that the world has become digital. And in Luxembourg, businesses are well in pain of have as many IT expert employees that they would like. “The Greater Region is emptied of these profiles”even declares Serge Linckels, director of the public training center Digital Learning Hub.

Among the Luxembourg population and among the cross-border workforce, there are no longer enough trained professionals. Indeed, Luxembourg is in the process of doubling down in this area. Both the State, with its Ministry of Digitalization and the University, and the private sector (with internationally successful companies such as the medical directory Doctena or the cosmetic services reservation platform Salon) are driving this development forward, explains Serge Linckels. It is mainly programmers who are in demand.

Currently, the professions ” Computer systems and telecommunications ” are the most requested from ADEM. A recent Jobday organized specifically around this specialty attracted more than 30 companies et 1,000 candidates !

But why, at the same time, do some IT professionals still have difficulty getting recruited in Luxembourg? Thus, Adem among its 19,532 currently registered job seekers includes approximately 500 men and women with this 2.0 skill. The director of the Employment Development Agency, Isabelle Schlesser, recently offered an explanation during an interview on RTL: The requirements of companies have evolved, as have the expectations of candidates.

High demands

“Some recruiters are looking for something very specific. As a result, they prefer not to recruit anyone rather than someone who does not meet their expectations 100%”assures Serge Linckels. “I doubt that Luxembourg companies have sufficient knowledge of technology to know where their needs lie”on the other hand, cynically underlines an IT expert, who prefers to remain anonymous, on the situation of the job market.

L’objective of Digital Learning Hub is to give people the opportunity to learn computer skills. For that, no prior knowledge is not necessary. It is also not essential to have completed schooling to participate in the courses. “It just takes determination to go all the way!”

Its director says that the most diverse people come to the training courses. Among them, computer scientists wishing to improve (for example learning a new programming language), people who studied computer science many years ago and want to get back up to speedbut also people taking a computer course for the 1st time.

It does not matter whether it is a residentof a border or a refugee: the courses are affordable (4 euros per hour). For unemployed people, the courses are even free.

” From two and a half years that we exist, we have already helped 9,000 people. Among them, many cross-border workers”explains the director about his Hub. “We respond to demand from ADEM and the labor market and try to offer the training requested. For example, if many companies asked [le langage de programmation] Pythonwe would create Python courses so that people have the opportunity to train and increase their employability”.

Pro tip

Serge Linckels, however, has some advice to give to those who would like acquire quickly some computer knowledge to make their CV stand out. The mastery of Word et Excel is no longer enough, “Also say if you know how to use ChatGPT or if you are proficient in searching for information on the web…”

“The program Power BIfor example, which allows you to display data in graphical form, is currently very popular. » Luxembourg has become a « data driven country », as they say. Whoever is able to findof document and of prepare data graphically clearly has an advantage. The knowledge of the data protection a you GDPR is also an advantage.
