(Keystone-ATS) “The agreement between Lebanon and Israel, supervised by the United States, will remain in effect until February 18, 2025,” the White House said in a brief statement. The Lebanese Prime Minister announced shortly afterwards that he was committed to continuing the application of the truce “agreement” with Israel until February 18.
Under the agreement that ended the war on November 27, the Israeli army was supposed to have completed its withdrawal from southern Lebanon on Sunday, where only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers can now be deployed.

But Israel announced Friday that the operation would continue beyond that date, saying the agreement has not been fully implemented by Lebanon.
Hundreds of residents of southern Lebanon braved the Israeli army on Sunday and tried to return to their villages, some still occupied by Israeli forces. The latter opened fire in their direction, killing 22 people according to the Lebanese authorities.
The White House added in its statement that the governments of Lebanon, Israel and the United States “will also begin negotiations for the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after October 7, 2023”, the day of the bloody attack on Palestinian Hamas against Israel.
