Lufthansa Industry Solutions and the German Aerospace Center are partnering to explore applications of quantum computing in the aviation sector. This partnership aims to optimize complex planning processes, such as flight and crew management.
Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND), a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group specializing in IT consulting and systems integration, will collaborate with several institutes of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to study the opportunities offered by quantum computing in the aviation sector.
Complex planning processes, such as managing flights, crews or even routes, are particularly suited to the use of quantum computers. This research partnership will focus on these strategic areas, with the ambition to harness the potential of this technology to address airline operational challenges.
-Two research subprojects will be carried out until December 2026. The first, dedicated to strategic planning processes, will rely on data provided directly by Eurowings, one of the airlines of the Lufthansa Group. The second will focus on tactical planning processes, exploring the role of quantum algorithms in flight route optimization and short-term assignment of aircraft and crews to respective flight plans and routes.
