The number of openings of safeguard, reorganization or liquidation procedures has exceeded the 67,000 mark in 2024, according to an analysis of commercial court judgments published by the Altares firm. This is a historic record, according to this company whose studies on business failures in France regularly refer to. Altares also estimates the number of jobs threatened as a result of these failures at nearly 256,000.
In detail, 67,830 procedures were opened in 2024, according to the Altares firm. A number consistent with trends observed since last summer with cumulative defaults over twelve months which exceed the levels observed after the financial crisis of 2009 and the sovereign debt crisis of 2010-2012.
-This surge in the number of companies in default of payment is part of a context of relaunching recovery procedures after they were frozen during the health crisis. The Altares firm also points to the current situation which it does not consider conducive to business. “The context of political and budgetary uncertainty, combined with a gloomy economic situation, disturbs business visibility and invites a wait-and-see attitude on the part of both businesses and the French”writes Thierry Millon, study director of Altares, in a press release.
“This situation creates a deadly general stagnation for the most financially weak or overly indebted structures, particularly those which have not yet been able to turn the page on Covid-19.”

Although it notes a slowdown in insolvencies at the end of 2024, the Altares firm does not forecast a decline for the year 2025. “If we can envisage being on the verge of reaching a threshold of failures, we can also fear that it will be a plateau, and therefore a commercial risk, with which we will have to deal for several more months “alerts Thierry Millon.
