A 51-year-old man is missing after falling overboard from a Norwegian Cruise Lines cruise ship while sailing in the Caribbean.
The search was also suspended approximately 24 hours after the fall, even though the man remains untraceable, according to several American media.
The passenger reportedly fell into Caribbean waters on December 26 around 3 p.m., according to NBC News, while the ship was sailing from Ocho Rios, Jamaica to Nassau in the Bahamas.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to the U.S. Network that the boat he was on, the Norwegian Epic, was about 30 miles east of Long Island, Bahamas, when the man fell.
“The guest was traveling with a large group and their family on board is being cared for and supported during this difficult situation,” a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed in a statement to USA Today.
The ship departed from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday, December 21, according to Cruise Hive, a blog popular among cruise enthusiasts.
A second ship would have come to help to try to find the fifty-year-old in the waters, according to People, but in vain.
After unsuccessful searches, the Norwegian Epic was allowed to continue its route to Nassau.
Norwegian Cruise Lines did not provide details on the circumstances surrounding the man’s fall, according to NBC News.
It is also unknown whether the search for the passenger will resume despite the departure of the cruise ship.
