An appeal already made by the Minister of Defense

Last Sunday, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said along similar lines that the Netherlands must prepare for all possible war scenarios due to the Russian threat. He also advised the Dutch to hold more cash.

The NVB stresses, however, that there is currently no sign of a cash rush in the Netherlands. “We have no idea about this. But if everyone withdraws money from their savings account, you will not immediately see it return to the bank accounts,” said the NVB spokesperson.

Well-prepared banks

The spokesperson reassures that Dutch banks are well prepared for all kinds of threats, such as cyberattacks. According to him, customers’ savings are always safe. “Cyber resilience has been a top priority for banks for years. Banks inform each other about incidents, analyze them jointly and share effective countermeasures“, he emphasizes.

In October, Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) also advised to always have cash at home in the event of a cyber attack.
