Bikers, this widespread practice will soon be banned

It will soon be three years since inter-file traffic was tested in 21 French departments including Bouches-du-Rhône, Loire-Atlantique and especially throughout the Île-de-France. While there will still be tolerance from August 1st, this practice will in fact become prohibited. Let’s take stock.

A final decision awaited

As our colleagues explain d’Automobile Magazinethe Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and Planning (Cerema) will analyze the data recorded over these three years. A decision will then be made to authorize, restrict or regulate this technique.

Supporters and opponents

In the meantime, very opposing views are clashing on this subject. Jean-Marc Belotti, the spokesperson for the French Federation of Angry Bikers, explained to Cnews :

It has to be done in good conditions. Motorcyclists must have an appropriate speed between the lines, not drive too fast and motorists must use their indicator when changing lanes. In this case, it goes very well, it’s just living together.

For his part, Michel Pons, head of the League against road violence, advocates on the contrary a tightening of the rules: “Safety must take precedence over speed. For 2% of motorized traffic, that’s 22% of deaths. That still shows that there is a problem.”.

What happens after August 1st?

Once this fateful date has passed, we can imagine that the authorities will apply a certain tolerance threshold before a final decision is made. However, the Highway Code prohibits lane-splitting and you theoretically risk a fine of 135 euros. And in the event of an accident, it is also possible that the insurance company will decide to turn against you. You must therefore exercise caution, because the legal risks are real.

Let us also specify that inter-file traffic is exercised at a maximum speed of 50 km/h and that the differential with other vehicles nearby must not exceed 30 km/h. If you are a motorcyclist, what is your point of view on the subject? Do not hesitate to give your testimony in the comments.

What you must remember :

  • Inter-file traffic has been tested in several French departments for three years.
  • It will be banned again from August 1st.
  • A final decision on this matter has yet to be made.
