In Essonne, Nexans doubles its production capacity for medical cables

After several investments in the field of energy cables (Italy, Morocco and more recently Norway), the cable systems manufacturer Nexans is developing its medical cables activity in France, in Draveil (Essonne). The manufacturer announces doubling the production capacity of its Ile-de-France site. 4.5 million euros were invested in this project launched at the start of 2023 to build a new 1000 m² medical workshop, delivered on January 1.

With this extension, the workshop will produce 6,000 km of micro-cables per year (instead of 3,000 km). Manufacturing will begin in the 3rd quarter of 2024.The primary goal is to double the capacity of around ten references [sur 50, ndlr] on current contracts and take on other business with this new capacity“, explains Laurent Doré, vice-president of the Aeronautics and Medical activity of the French flagship.

Booming demand for micro cables

In strong expansion, the market for invasive medical micro-cables should grow at an annual rate of 5% for five years, estimates Nexans. The micro cable is the application niche we are looking for in terms of differentiation. We work on the infinitely small world of cables, with conductors the size of a hair in certain cases, indicates Laurent Doré.

The sales share of these high-performance products should ultimately represent 40% of the commercial unit’s turnover, compared to 20% currently. The United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and France are the first markets for these micro-cables which are found in medical devices which enter the body and organs.

In addition to the new workshop, it is also by developing its own machines that the French flagship intends to stand out in a rapidly expanding market. The latter not existing for this type of section, it was the engineers from the Draveil factory who designed and manufactured the production equipment. Tailor-made which combines high speed and optical control which the industrialist intends to make a competitive advantage. “It’s a significant time investment, but it allows us to differentiate ourselves in the product offering through the manufacturing process,” believes Laurent Doré.
