Fuel prices in Morocco will increase from this Sunday. News that has the effect of a bomb for young motorists and all those who depend on their vehicle. But why this sudden increase?

Morocco’s gas stations are in turmoil. From July 1, the price of a liter of diesel will increase by 0.33 dirham, now oscillating from 12.79 to 12.76 dirhams depending on the distributors. At the same time, the price of gasoline will see an increase of around 16 cents, thus flirting with 15 dirhams per liter.

An unexpected increase which can be explained by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the surge in world oil prices.

The summer holidays are just beginning, and this increase comes on top of Eid ul-Adha expenses. For many families, it’s a double whammy. Transport professionals are on the verge of an explosion. Truck drivers are seeing their operating costs soar, and small carriers are at risk of bankruptcy.

This fuel crisis has disastrous consequences for the Moroccan economy. Sectors that depend on transport, such as agriculture or tourism, are in danger. The prices of basic products are increasing, inflation is soaring, and the purchasing power of Moroccans is collapsing.

Faced with this explosive situation, the government must act quickly. Stricter regulation of fuel prices in Morocco, targeted aid for the most vulnerable, and massive investment in sustainable transport could be avenues to explore.
