This tax increases by 10% and all French people must pay it

This increase will come into effect in a few days.

This is one of the little lines that we never read and that very few French people know. However, it is often better to dwell on them because they can cost money. One of them, regulated by the State, will even increase in a few days. Discreetly. The decree implementing the increase was signed several weeks ago and the public authorities were careful not to echo it. However, the increase is not negligible: + 10%! No one will be able to escape it, neither from the payment nor from the increase, since this tax is imposed on all French people (or almost).

This is in fact linked to your home insurance contract. While this protection is not mandatory for owners (although strongly recommended), it is for all tenants. The vast majority of French people therefore take out this home insurance every year. With one inevitability: the annual increase in the bill.

Constantly increasing number of claims, materials that cost more and more but also increased taxes… So many factors that force policyholders to write an increasingly hefty check. All these elements are detailed in the contract, but one of the lines is not linked to the goodwill of the insurance companies but to a decision of the State: the attacks tax.

This tax, indicated in the “Your contribution” part of your contract, is collected from all policyholders to fund the Guarantee Fund for Victims of Acts of Terrorism and Other Offenses (FGTI). This fund provides compensation for bodily injury caused to victims of acts of terrorism and certain victims of crime. Its amount is fixed and is decided by the Minister of the Economy. At the end of December, the latter decided to increase the level of the tax, increasing it from 5.90 to 6.50 euros, an increase of 10%.

On the amounts paid on insurance contracts, 6.50 euros will therefore be taken, from 1is July 2024, and paid into the FGTI. This will therefore contribute to the new increase in rates. And this will not stop since other additional premiums paid by policyholders will increase on July 1is January 2025 leading to an average increase of 10% in prices next year.
