The world is watching the conflict in the Middle East with anxiety. Regardless of the human tragedy, should we expect oil prices to rise?

We have studied how the price of oil has reacted during previous phases of hostilities in the Middle East and it gives an interesting pattern: the price of oil only rises sharply when the situation deteriorates in regions or countries where the oil is produced or where it passes by pipeline. This means that if the conflict is confined to Gaza, it should not significantly influence the price of oil. Iran’s warlike initiatives have certainly pushed prices up, but only temporarily.
