Swiss deeptech start-up Synthara announces that it has obtained more than $11 million in funding for the development of its in-memory chip technology designed for applications relying heavily on AI.

Synthara, a young Swiss deeptech startup active in the field of semiconductors, announces that it has raised more than $11 million, in order to achieve the declared objective of democratizing in-memory computing.

Founded in 2019, Synthara comes from the Institute of Neuroinformatics at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. The startup raised $5.5 million and received the equivalent of $5.9 million in financial support from multiple sources. Including 2.5 million francs from the Swiss Accelerator, an incentive program launched by Innosuisse in 2023 as part of financing measures and transitional solutions following the exclusion of Switzerland from the Horizon Europe framework program.

According to Synthara, its technology can unlock the potential of in-memory computing through collaborations with foundries, chipmakers and industry leaders. The funding will allow the firm to launch its patented product, ComputeRAM, in embedded computing applications.

The startup says embedded applications relying heavily on AI, such as robotics and sensing devices, are too complex for conventional embedded chips. By improving conventional on-chip memory, ComputeRAM enables microcontrollers to be 100 times more energy and latency efficient, according to Synthara’s release. Which adds that its high-performance and flexible microcontroller chips can address a wide range of AI-rich applications, reducing costs and time to market.

“The rise of AI is a societal and economic upheaval comparable to the great industrial revolutions of the past. As traditional semiconductor companies struggle to adapt to this new reality, Synthara aims to make Europe the driving force of this transformation and become the global benchmark for AI and advanced computing hardware. , explains Dr. Alessandro Aimar, founder and CTO of Synthara.
