On Saturday, November 2, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Rega sounded the alarm. A caver had not returned from his expedition. The man had immersed himself in the cave near the source of the Brenno river, in the Alpe di Pertusio area, late in the morning and did not reappear. Agents from the cantonal police and specialists from Swiss Speleological Rescue (Swiss Speleology Society) intervened on site and arrived by helicopter.

The searches immediately undertaken, made difficult by the small diameter of the passages, the shape of the cave as well as the poor visibility in the water, nevertheless made it possible to locate the man’s lifeless body around 7:30 p.m., at a depth more than 40 meters and approximately 200 meters from the entrance.

Throughout the day on Sunday, operations to recover the body (formal identification of which has not yet been possible) took place. But it will take several days and numerous dives by expert divers to bring back the victim. For security reasons and related to the investigation, access to the cave is prohibited.
