In a report published by the national energy mediator, relayed by Le Parisien, three out of four French people say they have already turned down the heating for financial reasons.
This is one of the main concerns of the French as winter approaches: the cost of energy and in particular heating. According to the publication of the national energy mediator, relayed by Le Parisien, Monday November 4, 75% of French people admitted to restricting their consumption in order to limit bills. If this figure seems enormous, it is decreasing since in 2022, the share of French people reducing their heating was 79%.
However, according to the study carried out by the Becoming institute on more than 2,000 French households, 70% of the households surveyed confirmed an increase in the amount of their electricity bills. This price increase is also noted for gas users, 66% of whom noted a higher bill than last year.
One in three French people are cold at home in winter
Another chilling percentage is that of French people who say they are cold in their homes. 30%, or almost a third of the population, suffer from it in winter. Among them, 32% identify their insulation as the cause of low temperatures in their home. “If 40% of households indicate having changed their consumption habits during the winter of 2023/2024, these efforts seem to be reaching their limits since 45% say they are already doing the maximum.”
For the majority of French people (88%), the change in behavior in energy spending is due to financial reasons, far ahead of environmental reasons. For 28% of consumers, the bills were so high that they had difficulty paying them.
