Canada Post says talks are continuing with the union that represents postal workers.

The Crown corporation clarified Sunday that both parties had agreed not to provide the required 72-hour notice of strike or lockout as long as the discussions are productive.

The Union of Postal Workers has been in strike position since today, but has not yet sent a strike notice, and Canada Post says activities are continuing as normal.

The Canadian Press tried in vain on Sunday to speak to a representative of the union.

Last week, Canada Post presented its latest contractual offer, which included salary increases of 11.5% over four years.

The union announced earlier in the week that its members had voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike if an agreement was not reached at the bargaining table.

Federal Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon met last Thursday with the union and Canada Post management to encourage them to reach a negotiated agreement.
